ParticipantI read every word with a smile.
Hell if you’re not brave.
Or tough.
You did great. Be proud. You made my entire week.
Keep posting. I know we’ll meet and when we do, first drink is on me.

ParticipantThe only reason I overcame my aversion to riding around in Tysons was to liberate myself from the car dealership waiting room. I used to sit in that room without windows listening to a 24-hour “all sports and nothing but sports” cable channel. I couldn’t get any work done because the cell phone call conversations going on around me were more interesting than anything in my life.
The staff is very friendly to me now that I’ve started rolling my bike in and out.
Eminva, you know we can get to Nordstrom Rack a lot easier than Tysons. We don’t even have to cross Route 7.

ParticipantThere is a back way into Tysons I off of Gallows Road involving a flyover ramp. But it took me a long time to figure out a route from my house because a cut-through trail linking two residential neighborhoods is not evident from driving.
The longer I play on bikes the more fun I have trying to figure out ways to get from point A to point B without performing a death defying act. I won’t ride down Route 123 towards McLean, but I see cyclists out there everyday.

ParticipantI have very fond memories of that ride. It was a lot of fun and Greenbelt is the absolute best at leading. Seems to me Eminva was involved last year too. It is a terrific opportunity to ride in DC if you don’t usually do that. I learned a lot on that ride about riding on the streets downtown. The gifts at the DC market are unique, I found two bicycle t-shirts, one is even clean enough to wear in public but definitely not the one with the mustache in place of handlebars.
If you get cold, and I have a hard time keeping my core warm, there are buildings to escape into to warm up. I think I was in the National Portrait Gallery last year and found another exquisite gift shop.
If I weren’t responsible for making sure no one breaks their neck in the moon bounce, I’d be there this year. But how could I possibly pass up the chance to play in a moon bounce in my backyard? Sacrifices have to be made.

Fairfax Advocates for Better Bicycling will be hosting rides throughout the winter and spring. Keep an eye out on http://www.fabb-bikes.org/events.html or http://fabb-bikes.blogspot.com/ . I know we’ll be doing a historical marker ride, route TBD. We’ll probably do a Reston Town Center to Udvar Hazy Museum (Air and Space Museum in Chantilly) ride again in the spring.
I’m trying to organize some kind of Cargo Bike ride as well. They’ll be some sort of non-profit or public service tie-in (delivering something to someone by bike?).
Does anyone have rides that they’d like to see FABB do in 2013?
I’d love to see some confidence building rides like:
1. Ride in the Tysons Corner area safely.
2. Ride in Fairfax City safely
3. Ride in Annandale with confidenceI believe there are novice cyclists out there who would like to explore safe routes but don’t feel like they have the skills to choose or navigate a route safely. Personally, it took me three weekends of trial and error to find a way into Tysons that I am comfortable-ish doing. But it is hard to figure these things out on your own, especially if you don’t have a lot of street riding experience. I know it’s not FABB’s jurisdiction but one of the first things I wanted to learn was how to ride safely into and out of DC. It does not seem like a challenge to most of the people on this forum but the first time I rode across the Memorial and Key Bridges I was fairly frightened. Having a guide makes all the difference.

ParticipantI saw Crysb race today! She was terrific. By the time my fingers thawed out enough to take photos, most of the forum people I know had gone on with their day but I did take some shots of Arlingtonrider and the Bagpipe Dude.
These shots give you and idea of the course and the close riding.

Alright, I’m in (missed pre-reg though). CAT4 here I come (my first CX race!)- look for a black LeMond and a “Thunderbird” kit.
Also riding in starting at about 06:15 from Clarendon (any takers?), may stop and join Dirt et al in Vienna but having to register on-site will complicate timing a bit. If my captive non CX spectator decides to sleep in I may leave even earlier and do the DR trails into the park (if anyone wants to flail in the dark, let me know)
Have a great time! Congratulations on entering this event!

ParticipantUm, not sure the trail o bike will work on the terrain. I’m bringing my mtb because I’m a wimp. I’ve done it on a cross bike. There are a lot of roots. And I hate roots more than I hate hills.

ParticipantThat’s great! I wish you the best of luck for a fast and safe race! You’re awesome!

ParticipantOld Chain Bridge Road is wide. Too wide. The speed creeps up on that road perceptibly. I agree with all your observations. Westmoreland isn’t terrible to ride on in most sections while Old Chain Bridge Road is harrowing. ‘Tis unfortunate because Books-a-Million is located next to Total Beverage on OCBR, an inspired bit of retail co-location.

ParticipantThanks for the much needed chuckle as I pay bills. Riley, you are the definition of hipster. Except you’re not pretending.
