I have been biking on the MVT to Old Town for years and wondering if the train track is in used. Sometimes, I even ride my MTB on track to avoid pedestrian traffic. I saw a coal train moving slowly when I ride back from National Harbor today.

Yes, I see the coal train on occasion. The coal is for the power plant next door; the train dumps most of its load in the coal heap next to the plant which you can sometimes see from the bike trail. Excess coal is stored at the end of the line in a warehouse by the waterfront (simply follow the tracks if you are curious); that is why you sometimes see the trains heading to what appears to be a dead end (they dump their excess coal then put the engines in reverse and back out).

This is simply a spur off the CSX mainline that runs from Union Station to FLorida.
