Hi all! It’s time for the funnest part of Freezing Saddles, the Pointless Prizes. These are fun activities – both crazy and mundane – that add a little something extra to the winter riding experience.

First of all, anyone can sponsor a prize – you can sponsor a prize, your friend who isn’t playing can sponsor a prize, even your mom can sponsor a prize. Second, Pointless Prizes can be about anything! They can be objective (like most miles ridden on New Years Day), they can be subjective (like Sock Game). They can be embarrassing (like rider with the most falls) and they can be heartwarming (Bike Samaritans, helping others in need). Check out last year’s thread for more examples.

Here is the current list of Pointless Prizes:
Prize Name (Sponsor) – Description #Hashtag
Elevation per mile prize (QuikAF77) – Most elevation per mile on average for the entire competition NA
Public Art Finder (Boomer2U) – Any display of art (graffiti, mural, sculpture or any sort of artistic expression, loosely defined), permanent or temporary installation, that is freely accessible to the public and includes a bicycle somewhere in the picture frame #publicartfinder

The 2021 Loopy for Arlington competition was dominated by Kilgore T who swept all categories completing an astonishing 148 Arlington Loops, 83 clockwise and 65 counterclockwise and thus 65 Matching Loops. Since the Bentbike Organization refuses to be responsible for anyone developing adult-onset diabetes, so by rule Kilgore T is eligible for the Matching Loops Prize of a custom redesigned box of Froot Loops (TM) only:

Dave Pomeroy was this year’s (2nd) most unwound competitor with 78 Clockwise Loops, one for each day of Freezing Saddles:

And Chadd Westoff got himself the (2nd) most wound up this year with 20 Counterclockwise Loops:

    Congratulations Kilgore, Dave and Chadd!

Please PM me if you would like to arrange a meeting to receive your prize. I usually go to the HDCC at Best Buns in Shirlington on Wednesday morning, although since I’m still on telework, I skip it on rainy days.

The most awesome prize ever…congrats to the 3 winners.
I couldn’t compete this year and thought of them often during FS. But mostly I will miss my 5th box of fruit loops! Always a great job Bentbike…

Thanks to everyone who participated in my rapid-fire no-warning #Wikipedia20 pointless prize: consularrider, Catedrew, camiller, Serdar, kbikeva, SteveO, and CBGanimal. I also feel like I should give a shout-out to drevil, who was a prolific poster of Wikipedia links via the photo competition.

And the winner is Catedrew, whose post about great uncle Charles R. Drew sucked me into a Wikipedia rabbit hole of local and national history!

Catedrew, I’ll message you about getting your actual tangible pointless prize!

I propose a pointless price for visiting and photoing (and pointing) to the four points (corners) of the DC boundary.

Even more pointless prize for pointing out all points in one pointless ride.

Char Miller, did we ever get a list of winners for this? I’m trying to put together a spreadsheet of all the prize winners for the final Zoom happy hour, and this is one of the few I’m still missing.
