Post a picture (on this thread, or wherever the BAFS cabal says pictures can go, we will figure it out I guess) taken while on a bike ride of new transportation infrastructure under construction. One point per photo, no more than one photo per ride/day. Each participant should post any one “piece of infra” only once. If you can manage to get your bike in the picture, that picture gets two points.
Modes.
Bike infra. Of course. New PBL. New paint only bike lane. Paint bike lane getting protection, all yes. A sharrows? No of course not. A new section of multi use trail, yes. New bike racks or CaBi stations? Er, no.
Transit – yes. Intercity or commuter rail, heavy rail transit (EG metro), light rail (did anyone say Purple?) Track, stations, station entrances, etc. Bus Rapid Transit – Yes. A new dedicated bus lane, for sure. A short queue jump lane or new bus stop as a symbol of larger BRT line – sure. A short queue jump lane or bus stop in isolation – maybe not. I will judge if its important enough to count. Vehicle maintenance facilities? Maybe.
Highway expansion or street – no. Unless there is accompanying stuff for other modes (I66 Parallel trail, yes. HOV lanes that buses can also use – er, no) Possible exception, if its closing a gap in a grid in a way that is friendly to bike/ped and urbanism.
Sidewalks – sometimes. Important sidewalk gap, yes. Wide Multi use path – probably. Adding some ramps at an intersection or very short bit of sidewalk. Generally not. I will be the judge.New? Not just a repair, unless it adds something significant.
Under Construction? Ideally a photo of stuff being built, or partly done. Pics of construction equipment staged are great. If its planned but not funded, still in procurement, etc. No. If its supposed to be UC but no equipment has shown up yet, well maybe. If its open – transit vehicles in revenue operation, or a ribbon cutting has happened, no, its no longer UC. If there’s transit vehicle testing, ok. A ribbon cutting scheduled, but hasnt happened, ok. If its not transit and no ribbon cutting, but blocked off, okay. If not blocked off but no opening announcement – well lets chat. Maybe,
One photo per “project” If there are major separate sections those can be considered different projects. I am thinking of the DC phase of the Long Bridge, and the phase over the river. NOT each station on the Purple line (the bike ped bridge part of the Long Bridge would be separate – of course AFAIK wont be happening during BAFS 2026)
Where? I am thinking greater DC. If elsewhere, be prepared to explain to me more about the project.
If there is too much ambiguity in the above, you have a month to argue for a modification to the above rules.
