Good news: there are new protected bike lanes on Army Navy Drive. They are smooth and room.

Bad news: This morning a garbage truck was in the lane in front of the apartments between Joyce and the Fashion Centre parking and blocking it (must have backed in). A car turned into the lower level parking without noticing the electric skateboarder (or likely the cyclist immediately behind) and the skateboarder managed to stop his board and jump off without being hit.

There needs to be more signage and training of drivers for these lanes. They opened recently, when there are typically fewer cyclists, but not everything is aware of the need to look both ways before stopping and driving through them. The garbage truck should never have been there in the first place.

Arlington folks should give input on where to request new signage – 311 request maybe?

As for training, the lack of training for drivers on dealing with bike infra, etc is a widespread problem. Virginia Bicycle Federation has talked about addressing that with DMV.  I’m not sure where that is on the agenda right now.
