For years I have ridden south of Old Town on the Parkway — one of our area’s 4 primary bike routes for serious cyclists — and was steamed to see that the NPS has now posted “No Bikes” signs. I found a thread here, but no serious discussion. Obviously the Mt Vernon bike trail is too dangerous for anyone other than families and dog-walkers. Wondering why these signs are suddenly in place — and if WABA was contacted about this change to such a long-standing favorite bike route, or if they took a position and (hopefully) fought against it. Have any of the clubs put together any petitions or contacted the NPS?

Not sure why they are enforcing the rules now, but if you take a look at the Park Compendium on the NPS site it lists specific areas where cycling is prohibited on the roadways, on page 12.

I’ve created a map for you, if you’re more visual, although it lacks the Potomac Heritage Trail.
