W&OD from Falls Church to Reston: Some frozen slush and black ice in the usual spots near Shreve and between Gallows and Vienna. I was on my cross bike and rode on the frozen slush/gravel next to the trail, which worked well. More of the same for a stretch just west of Vienna. West of Hunter Mill it looked pretty bad, so I took Hunter Station and Glade the rest of the way to work. A guy in front of me on slicks managed the Gallows to Vienna section, but decided to turn around west of Vienna.

This was wise. I had studded tires, but still wiped out on one of the sheets of ice near American Dream Way in Reston. Going relatively slow, so not a big deal (maybe a little bruised; most importantly, the macbook is fine). The only times I’ve fallen in the winter have been on studded tires; I guess this is like saying that most shark attacks happen in shallow water. Anyway, hopefully I got that stat out of the way for this winter.

I turned onto the WOD at Temporary road, headed east about 100 yards, saw all the ice and said NO MAS! I looped around to American Dream Way (hilarious that it is a gated road!) and hit the Metro. I’m glad your fall wasn’t serious.

The Rock Creek Park trail from the bridge south of Tilden Street to Porter Street was a mostly a sheet of ice this morning.

Anyone ride Trollheim this morning? Any ice? I need to leave early and that’s my usual route home (though not in). I’m on 25 slicks.

The bridge leading to it is fine, but I don’t have to make the troublesome turn so can’t say for sure.

Steadfastly refusing to acknowledge any ice on the trails.

Rode from Vienna to Ballston this morning, please use caution when riding from Vienna to Dunn Loring bike path. There are several patches of ice especially between Whole Foods Grocery Store (Vienna) to the Gallows Roads intersection. When in doubt – dismount and walk!

The rest of the bike path from Gallows to Ballston was clear of ice. Enjoy your day!

Trollheim was dry this morning. No ice. The descent from the GWMP overpass to the TR Island parking lot, however, was a challenge somewhere between 6:30 and 7:00 when I flintstoned down, but mid-40s and sun will fix that for the afternoon.

I rode the Trollheim this morning on studded tires, but did not notice any ice on the Trollheim itself. However there is a small sheet of black ice that was covering the MVT a little south of the Trollheim. Only about 8 feet by 8 feet, but I didn’t see it until I was right on top of it, so I was glad to have studs. It maybe gone by now, though, who knows.

More generally, from the top of Rosslyn Hill, down the Custis to the MVT, across 14th St bridge, and then through neighborhood streets, the only patch of ice I encountered at around 8:30 to 9:00 am was the above-mentioned 8′ by 8′ patch of ice south of the Trollheim.

By 7:45am, the GWMP overpass was fine. You need to sleep in a little longer.

Should be fun going home on Wednesday, thunderstorms, 20 mph wind and 60 degrees.
