Every year there is confusion about posting to become eligible to participate. Carol always explains at length because she’s nicer than me AND she has nearly infinite patience (I know, I’ve tried it).

Freezing Saddles is a game solely for member of the Washington Area Bike Forum.  All communications about Freezing Saddles will take place [here]. Thus, you need to register [here] and make at least one post in order to register for Freezing Saddles.

The above is from the instructions (link in the sticky forum thread). Why did we include this? We included it to BUILD COMMUNITY. The idea is that this is a game among people who sort of know each other through the forum, or get to know each other through the forum. This used to be an invaluable resource for DMV cyclists. People here walked me through switching my daily rider from 3X to 1X. Someone here helped me replace my bottom bracket when it exploded. I’ve gotten route advice here, I’ve bought parts here, and I’ve made friends here.

So the point was for all of you playing Freezing Saddles to contribute something. Post about yourself. Post about your bike if you don’t want to talk about yourself. Post about your favorite way to stay warm on cold rides. Post about your favorite route through a car sewer. Or ask a question! People LOVE telling you about their cold weather tricks and their sneaky routes that avoid that one really bad turn. Or if you REALLY have nothing of substance to add, post to the newbies thread so at least it can be easily ignored.

You do not, ever, under any circumstances, have to post to the Freezing Saddles Strava group. In fact, it is encouraged that you NOT do that, as then everyone gets a notification. If everyone gets too many notifications, people may start hurling their phones into the sea, which is bad for wildlife. Once you are on a team, your team may use Strava to communicate and that’s fine. Only maybe 10 people get that notification and it’s much less risky for wildlife.

Save the whales by posting here instead of Strava.

    YES.

Also my sanity. You will be saving that, too

@jrenaut, you have sanity?  I thought it was a requirement for Freezing Saddles that we lack sanity.  😆

I keep my sanity in a jar from January to March so it doesn’t interfere
