So, I have a whole bunch of snail mail and email requests for donations to various bike related wonderful organizations. Pondering them has led to confusion and I need help to sort it out. To wit:

-I’m committed to donating to both WABA and FABB (Fairfax Advocates for Better Bicycling) — these are local organizations that work in our region and my county, respectively

-From there, it gets confusing: there’s League of American Bicyclists (LAB), People for Bikes and Rails to Trails Conservancy. I think I understand the mission of the latter, and I can see the wisdom in contributing some money to them given that I ride on a rail trail every day to get to and from work, and also hope to explore some others across the country.

I’m a member of LAB, an LCI and am inclined to support them. But what is the difference between the mission of LAB and People for Bikes? I understand the two organizations considered joining forces and ultimately decided not to, but where does that leave them? Is there a difference in emphasis that makes giving to both wise?

Thanks for any help you can provide.

    Liz

I don’t do much with LAB. People For Bikes is one of my groups. It is the public side of Bikes Belong Foundation (which is more the industry side of things.) People For Bikes does pretty much what their tag-line says… it gives voice to all those that join it and sign the pledge. It is primarily a group that works to reach out to people to help get rid of excuses that keep them from riding their bikes. It also takes the power of the people that it “collects” and uses it to lobby for bicycle related projects and legislation.

People for Bikes is closely related to Bikes Belong, which does a lot of the nitty gritty work of providing grants for projects and starting/supporting programs like Safe Routes To School and the Green Lane Project. Bikes Belong benefits from the power that People for Bikes generates, but it also gets power (and resources) from the bicycle industry for legislation, grants and other cycling programs.

Bikes Belong has a LOT to do with why the National Bike Summit happens each year.

I’m sure there’s a lot more to both… that’s the thumbnail view of them. Does that help answer your question?

Sorry to have been slow to respond. I’ve been spending a little quality time away from my computers.

    Pete
